  • 3 cups plus 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced
  • 5 tbsp granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 1 1/2 tbsp ground cinnamon (for coating)
  • 1 3/4 tsp ground nutmeg (for coating)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In one bowl, whisk together flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In another bowl, beat softened butter with granulated and brown sugars until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla.
  4. Gradually combine the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients until just mixed; fold in diced apples gently.
  5. In a small bowl, mix granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg for the coating.
  6. Scoop dough balls and roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture before placing them on the prepared baking sheet two inches apart.
  7. Bake for about eight minutes or until lightly golden around the edges. Let cool before transferring to a wire rack.
