  • 10 ounces (284 grams) fresh strawberries (divided)
  • 34 tablespoons (4450 grams) granulated sugar
  • zest from 1/2 lemon (optional)
  • 1/2 tablespoon (7 milliliters) freshly squeezed lemon juice (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 2 cups (473 milliliters) cold milk

Instructions

  1. Hull and chop 6 ounces of fresh strawberries into a bowl. Mash them using a potato masher or fork until crushed. Mix in sugar and optional lemon zest and juice.
  2. Transfer the mixture to a small pot and simmer over medium-low heat for 2-5 minutes until thickened into syrup.
  3. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla extract if desired, and let it cool to room temperature before refrigerating for about 1 hour.
  4. Dice the remaining strawberries.
  5. In chilled glasses, divide the cooled strawberry syrup, top with diced strawberries, and pour in cold milk. Stir gently to combine and serve immediately.
