  • 1 lb broccoli, cut to bite-size florets
  • 1/2 lb button mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger
  • 4 dried Chinese chili peppers
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable broth
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons light soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon dark soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons peanut oil
  • 2 green onions, sliced

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sauce by mixing vegetable broth, light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, sugar, ground black pepper, and sesame oil in a bowl. Set aside.
  2. Mix cornstarch and water in a separate bowl to create the slurry; set aside.
  3. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, steam broccoli for 1 minute until bright green. Transfer to a plate.
  4. Sauté sliced mushrooms in peanut oil on high heat until browned (about 2-3 minutes), then move them to one side of the skillet.
  5. Add chili peppers, minced garlic, ginger, and green onions to the other side of the skillet; sauté until fragrant.
  6. Return broccoli to the pan and pour in the prepared sauce. Stir in the slurry and cook until thickened. Serve hot.
